Food transport LKH Innsbruck supply corridor

Special requirements require special solutions.

Clinics and hospitals are complex systems that have to function perfectly. Food logistics in particular is an enormous challenge in healthcare facilities that requires smart solutions.

At the Innsbruck Regional Hospital, up to 1,500 patients are provided with three meals a day. The aim is for the food to reach the patients fresh and tasty, with the highest hygiene standards.

The LKH has supply tunnels that connect all buildings on the hospital grounds. All goods are distributed through the tunnels, which ensures little activity on the surface and safe transport routes.

All food is distributed to the houses via the underground supply routes. From there it goes to the different wards and finally reaches the patient. Breakfast in particular presented a challenge for the LKH, as ingredients had to be transported in E2 boxes.

In order to ensure the highest level of hygiene and to maintain the quality of the food, closed transport wagons were required that could hold E2 crates and maintain the temperature until the food was served. The wagons had to have drawbars so that they could be connected to each other and to a tractor that would pull the wagons together through the tunnels at a speed of 8 km/h. You won't find anything like this in the standard version.

The solution was a modification of the B.PRO TTW (tray transport trolley): the corrugated walls were specially adapted for the E2 boxes and changes were also made to the doors. Drawbars were designed accordingly and integrated into the construction.

Today, 20 “TTW breakfast trolleys” with a total loading capacity of 200 E2 boxes transport food through the supply tunnels of the LKH Innsbruck every day, thus supporting a fresh and healthy start to the day for patients and staff.

“The modified transport trolleys from B.PRO ensure that the lovingly prepared breakfast reaches the patient in top form.”
