In view of the modest recycling rates, this is an important step for the environment.
If you believe the figures in the media, Germany is the world recycling champion. This means that in no other country in the world is more waste returned to the recycling cycle than in Germany. That is honourable, but unfortunately still far too little.
The amount of plastic packaging recycled in Germany ranges from 15.6% to just under 50% - depending on which institute, ministry or organisation publishes this figure. The remaining packaging waste ends up in residual waste or is exported to South or Southeast Asia, from where most of it ends up in the sea.
There is only one way to counteract packaging waste. And this system, which has no alternative, is called ‘reusable’.
No packaging is the best packaging
The EU-wide prohibition against single-use plastic for disposable tableware took effect in July of 2021. As from 2023, caterers, delivery services and restaurants will also be required to offer reusable containers as an alternative to single-use containers for food and beverage takeaway and delivery. In future, consumers will have a choice between single-use takeaway packaging and reusable packaging. This was decreed by the German federal cabinet with an amendment to German packaging law.
This change doesn't prohibit single-use packaging, but at least it will enable consumers to decide for themselves which alternative they choose. Reusable versions can't be more expensive than food and beverages sold in single-use packaging. Reusable cups also have to be available for every size offered.
B.PRO's reuse solution
We have to take action now and not just offer reusable alternatives, but massively reduce the amount of rubbish we create – especially in our day-to-day lives.
The B.PRO Gastronorm system is a step in the right direction. The robust stainless steel containers are an ideal and sustainable reusable solution. They are available in many sizes and practical designs and are the perfect alternative to disposable packaging in delivery and to-go shops.
All containers are temperature-resistant and food-certified. The B.PRO Gastronorm boxes impress with their durability. They are ‘unbreakable’, stable, hygienic and perfect for years of use in tough everyday kitchen conditions.
- Continuity in change
The start of the new year also marked a new chapter for the B.PRO Group. On 1 January 2025, Dr Ralf Klöpfer took over as CEO from Egon Kofler.
